Chapter 23

About an hour after Nate left, Holly was finishing up her watch at Alcatraz when someone pushed open the door without first knocking.

“Hey, can’t you read the sign?” Holly said, perhaps being a little more stern than she ought to. “Protocol says you gotta knock and wait for someone to let you in.”

The man came inside and apologized. He was Hispanic, his hair tied behind him in a long braid. He was also wearing a faded jean jacket, in spite of the heat. He glanced down at a torn piece of paper in his hand. “Are you Holly?”

Oh, goodness, not a trainee now when she was nearly done with her shift. There was a case to solve and showing newbies the ropes would only set her back even further. “Yeah, that’s me. Look…”

He held out his hand demurely. “I’m Javier. Trey told me to report to you and—”

She took his hand. “Yeah, Javier, this is really not a good time. We’ve got a lot going on right now. I’m expecting someone any minute to come replace me. Maybe they could—” She tried pulling her hand away and noticed he wasn’t letting go. “Hey…”

Then she noticed a glint in his darkened eyes as he reached behind his back with his free hand and came out with a knife. In one swift motion, Javier thrust the blade at her belly. Holly shifted to the side to avoid the worst of it. The blade sliced into the side of her hip. Blood spurted out over his hand.

Holly squealed with pain and shoved Javier back before he could do it again. His back slammed against the door.

Brooks was up on his feet, a look of sheer horror on his face. “Hey,” he shouted. “I’m the one you want, not her.”

Holly reached down to the holster at her side and came up with her pistol. But Javier was too fast. In one swift motion he grabbed her wrist and angled the weapon away from them. Two shots went off, burying themselves into the cabin’s timber frame. Javier’s other hand was over his head, the knife arcing down for Holly’s chest. She caught his wrist as the two of them fell onto the table, which thudded against the wall with a loud boom. Javier was strong, definitely stronger than her, but she realized her obsession with cutting endless cords of wood and heaving giant sandbags around the property had meant she wasn’t the easy target she used to be.

Brooks was still standing behind the steel bars of his cage, screaming for help, a look of terror and panic etched across his features.

But in spite of Holly’s new athleticism, Javier’s blade was inching ever so slowly toward her ribcage. Her triceps trembled as her muscles began to give way. With her back pinned against the table, Holly was becoming acutely aware this fight wasn’t going in her direction.

In a last-ditch effort, she brought her knee up into his groin. Javier’s body jolted, but he only pressed down harder.
